I have 2 ds that will be going through the SCM history.  As I look ahead, my second ds will start history in module 4. My question and concern is that in 10th-12th grade he will have no American History.  Has anyone else run into this problem?

I’m bumping this up for you – not sure the answer, tho I have read that some condense the first couple modules to make it into a four year history rotation.

To me personally it does not matter WHEN they study a particular time period.  There is no natural law saying a child MUST have american history in grade X, Y, or Z.  However, to me, it is also personal preference.  If you feel a child needs to cover the two american history modules (5 and 6) in late high school, then choose to shorten combine, or drop other modules to put them on that timeline.  The big drawback it seems to me is that you then have each child ending up on their own schedule come high school, instead of keeping the whole family together in the time period (which is one of my absolute favorite things about SCM – we stay together as a family, but have things at our own level to study that time period).  If you only have a few children or they are widely spaced maybe it won’t be that big a deal for you do end up teaching several history rotations at once to different ages.  Many curricula do that.  However, it doesn’t work for my family because it doesn’t work for ME.  I need to keep everyone in the same time period for my own sanity.

    Thanks, Melissa for bumping:)

Tristan, thanks for your thoughts.  You helped me put in perspective.  I do want to have both boys in the same history rotation.  I do personally want them to both have American History in HS and I think I can make that happen.  By the time ds #2 is in HS my first will be graduated.  I will just do module 5 & 6 American History along side the last 2 ancient studies.  By then I will have gone through the ancients a couple of times so I think I could make it work.  I had another aha moment today when I realized that the Book of Centuries will be key to help him keep it all in perspective.

Thanks again ladies, it is so nice to have a great group of mommies to go to with questionsSmile
