Hello! I’m new to Charlotte Mason, but I am diving in head first this year with my 4 oldest children.  I’ve been reading through the forums and the various recommendations for math.  I am planning on using SCM Elementary Arithmetic Books 1 and 2 for my younger two this year.

I was curious how much of the Strayer Upton Books 2/3 is covered in Practical Geometry 1 and Elementary Arithmetic Book 5.  I want to incorporate an arithmetic review for my older two as they begin algebra this year.  I wasn’t sure if the SCM Book 5 or Strayer Upton Books 2/3 would be better for this.  It looks like SU Book 2 covers area and volume, but I don’t see those topics covered in the SCM arithmetic or geometry books.  Are these topics that will be covered in the future Arithmetic 6 and Geometry 2 books?

    Thank you for your help!

Hi, Jessica. We begin area and cubic measures (volume or ) in a hands-on way in the Weights & Measurements section of Book 3. In Book 4, we add to that in the Weights & Measurements section by learning and making those measures using the metric system. Book 5 reviews both area and cubic measures along with working with these measures using decimals.

I’m not sure how this aligns with Strayer-Upton as I didn’t look at their S&S while writing the elementary series. It works well with the series and having the students ready for algebra.

I hope this information is helpful for you.

Yes, very helpful thank you!  I recently received a copy of Book 1 and 2 and will hopefully, receive Book 3 and 4 in the next week.  They are beautifully written, and I’m looking forward to working with them.
