    Hey ladies –

I am trying to wrap up planning for next school year and am feeling a tad overwhelmed. I guess I kind of am feeling like a failure in a few areas .  My thoughts seem scrambled today , so let me try to explain .I am slowly trying to incorporate more CM friendly schooling , I know that the advice here has been slowly add 1 or 2 areas/ subjects and build a routine with those before adding others. Last August the newbies to our schedule were Speaking spanish with Miss Mason , Handicrafts and Hymn study . I had all of these great ideas for Handicrafts and had planned for the whole year , but we only did it for about 5 weeks last fall. And Speaking spanish with Miss Mason was a challenge for us , I flopped miserably with our Spanish.  But to say something positive — I kept up with our Narration all year and have seen great improvements in that area.

I am not trying to be harsh with myself or anything. I think we all can commiserate together in the simple fact that , we have all these great plans and fail at keeping them up or implementing them.  I REALLY wanted to gain ground with spanish this year . I REALLY wanted my kiddos to find fascination with making/creating things with handicrafts, and from that establish new found hobbies. But neither of that happened this year. Life happens . We get busy, things unexpected happen or we are just plain tired and pare back to the essentials.

Our schedule is we are home 4 days and 1 day at our co-op . I volunteer to teach a class so that is another thing I am responsible for. This next year my son will be taking Lego Robotics & Baking  and my daughter will take Drama & Music (learning to play the recorder) . So I need to make room in our schedule / time for these commitments.

How many of you are able to accomplish ALL the subjects listed in the SCM curriculum guide ( and balance it with other commitments ) ?

Do you do a 2nd attempt at the same subjects that you were unsuccessful with ? Do you wait a year and try again the following year?   What things do you wish to focus on this next year and how will you see to it that you stick with it ?

I am wanting to pick your brains  in hopes that you will share your experiences and also that I may gain some insight or feedback . This is a wonderful forum and  I am so happy to be a part of it 🙂

    Blessings,

    Jamie

    Great question!

I hope you get some very practical answers and encouragement.

BTW, Did you mention how many children you have and their ages?

We use the guide as a starting point.  We don’t get everything done either.  I’ve been going through Prima Latina for a few years now, so I understand how the foreign language goes!  We enjoy the program and I like teaching it, but it’s generally the first thing I drop when we are falling behind.

I try to keep up with 3R’s, history, Bible, literature, and science.  On top of this, I try to add at least one extra each day.  It may be a poem or two, listening to a classical CD while doing math (or chores), a handicraft project, nature walk, etc.

Two years ago we added our 5th child and this year we had a move…it seems most years with have some big life challenge that gets in the way of homeschooling.  Add this to the general chaos of being home all day with a bunch of kids, and it’s difficult (or even impossible) to get everything I’d like accomplished each day!

I have one son who is 6. We started in January, and already have experienced this. I wanted to introduce some French and Spanish. Miss Mason for French was not going as I expected so I ended up letting him watch Caillou in French, and Salsa for Spanish. I’ll pull out Miss Mason next year. Our library has some foreign language song CDs and I think we’ll enjoy some of those.
For Science I thought we could enjoy a unit study approach each term. Term one didn’t seem as interesting as I had imagined, so we’ll dive into 106 Day of Creation Studies starting in May and make it last 5 terms.
Handicrafts is not really interesting to my son right now, but he seems interested in going to the free project day at Home Depot each month. How kind of Home Depot to cover that for us!!
Yes, I am learning to find what fits best. I keep telling myself a quote I read recently ‘Keep cutting back until there is peace in your home’
Looking forward to hearing other responses

Ladies thanks for your input ! I hope more can add to what has already been shared !

Holly thank you for the idea that the curriculum guide is your “starting point” !! I should adopt that mindset.  It’s meant to be a tool , somewhere for us to start at, but we shouldn’t let ourselves get sucked in  to thoughts of “doing it all” if it’s just not doable for our family.

My3boys I have 2 kiddos – I refer to them as my “dynamic duo ” . 🙂  My son is about to turn 9 and my daughter is 7.

What is the hardest for you ladies to keep momentum with, and not quit or let it take a back seat to other things?  Just curious if the  majority would say something more on the academic side ….. like science ? Or foreign language ?  Or is it the extra’s like composer study, poetry or art ?

I love hearing your experiences 🙂
