We will be starting Term 2 of Ancient Egypt tomorrow. I’m pre-reading and seeing the length of the Exodus Commentary by Ganz. We do history as part of our group time. I dismiss my 5 and 4 year old when I get past the bible and poetry memorization. However, my 7 and 9 year old are in it for the long haul. We do SCM History or Geography and then read aloud from a living science book, Trial and Triumph, or Tales from Shakespeare. (Looping)

I’m looking for the way YOU handled or would suggest the reading of the lengthy Exodus commentary for my age groups.

    Thanks in advance.

We did Ancient Egypt last year and I really liked the Ganz commentaries but I can’t imagine my now-7yo listening to all of that. It’s a lot to take in. In fact, this year we are doing Ancient Greece and I have only included her for Geography, adjusting to her level. I think it’s just too much for her to join her brothers (14, 12 and 10) for Bible and History so she goes off and plays with her little sisters (5 and almost 3).

Even for the big kids it might be good to break up some of those lessons. I don’t have a lot of OT knowledge so I tend to try and savor this new information. I think the Ganz commentaries are very helpful.

    Have fun!

You can pre-read the commentary and either summarize the information for your children or share excerpts from it that you think will be interesting and useful to them.

Thank you! Today was our first stab at it. I preread it last night. I ended up reading a bit and summarizing a bit. We all enjoyed it very much.

Lessons like this show me how much better it is to be prepared as a teacher! 🙂

Last year, when we completed ancient Egypt, ds 14, dd 10, and ds7, were all expected to stay in the same area, kitchen -livingroom ( a large open area) to listen to me reading the commentary out loud. I really enjoyed the commentary and we’d re-read a highlighted bit from the day before starting the new reading.

I looked back at my notes and the commentary really gave us good discussion and better narrations for the new Bible readings. I think it also gave the first books of the Bible, a better understanding with the commentary.
Also, before I started reading , the children would get something to do quietly while I read. Like legoes, paints, dolls, playdough and tractors, or capsela (gears and motors for building contraptions, my boys love, love them) They tend to listen very well when their hands are occupied. I hope this is helpful. Martha
