So my 6 year old just expressed his desire to learn about the stars and planets. We have only been reading living books (Pagoo & now the Burgess Book). I was planning on picking up some living books on gardening for the summer, since we have our first veggie garden growing this year and follow up with Outdoor Secrets. Because of his interest I was thinking of starting Apologia’s Astonomy instead. What would you ladies do? Another reason I was leaning to Outdoor Secrets was my 3 (would be 4) year old is following along with us quite closely in our science readings and I know he’d probably get lost if we jump to the astronomy. Thanks ladies.

Why not just read living books on astronomy and take him outside with a telescope on a clear night? You may also find some ideas from the Young Science Explorers newsletter (www.homesciencetools.com) and the Handbook of Nature Study blog/newsletter (www.handbookofnaturestudy.com).

Wow! Thank you both for the great links and resources! This helps me solidify my decision to not add apologia, at least not yet.

A good pair of binoculars will give you a better experience with viewing astronomical things than a cheap telescope. The bonus is that the binoculars can also be used for bird watching and other nature study activities.
