Does anyone know of a good DIY science experiment book for a 5th grader? My children all love to do science experiments and, since I would rather bang a hammer on my toe than do a science experiment, I was thinking of having my 5th grader lead the younger ones in an experiment maybe once a week. I am hoping for something that would have simple experiments and be completely explained by the text. Anyone?
Janice Van Cleave has several science experiment books, and we’ve gotten some of them at our local library. They are pretty simple and straightforward, so your 5th grader could easily handle them for your younger ones.
Also, there is a fun science experiment book called “Naked Eggs and Flying Potatoes” by Steve Spangler. You can look up some very brief videos of his experiments on Youtube.
That sounds like an awesome idea! My son loves experiments, too, but I rarely have time to get everything together and help him do them. But if there are some that a 10-yr-old really could do on their own, that would be wonderful.
I will be watching this thread and checking those suggestions as well. 🙂
I chose A Reason for Science for this year for the science experiments/kits. But it is PRICEY! We looked into http://www.neoescience.com as well, and it comes with kits for experiments. Don’t know if you need a whole kit or just a few ideas. I am with you on the hating of experiments, though!
@ServingwithJoy, I’ve just check out A Reason for Science and it IS pricey. Whoa! I am wondering if one can get away with only having the TM on this one. Do you think that would be possible?
I chose to get the workbook and the experiment kit without the TM. I know the website says the TM is indespensible, but from what I saw the TM basically repeats the same information that the kids have in their workbooks. The sample I looked at added such helpful information as, “Be sure your students wear goggles”. Don’t think I am going to pay $50 for THAT sage advice!
I wanted my 5th and 6th grader to work on it independently, so I just ordered the student resources. But I’ll bet you could do the TM and kit (no workbooks!) as well.
Thanks! I’m going to research it a bit more. My oldest will be in 6th next year and I was wanting something different than living books alone for her for 6th through 8th anyway. This would definitely solve my experiment anxiety and let her work independently while I continue with the living books for my youngers…and they could participate and benefit from her science experiments as well!
Heather, here’s a website with a ton of free science experiments… http://eequalsmcq.com/LabNotesArchive.htm They look pretty simple to follow, but effective. You can also sign up for a free monthly newsletter.
