We have used a boxed item off the shelf called “Tasty Science”.
It is fun. We also signed up for free science classes at http://www.superchargedscience.com/ last year. And we joined the eScience this year. Aurora is great.
Here are some good books we like for science experiments with our 6 yo son. He’s on the verge of being able to do many of them himself (he’s not reading well enough yet for one).
My son also loves Crazy Machines, a computer game. It’s a physics simulator. He gets ideas and then builds things like it in real life (except electrical). He’s a lover of marble race and dominos tracks too. We limit time on it but I think it gives him good ideas. I know computer games are debatable and I do wonder what CM would have thought about them. =) I’m fine with them as long as they do things in real life and read books *more* than play the games.
One of my best thrift store finds was Janice VanCleave’s Science around the Year. It has simple projects arranged by season. Each experiment also has a list of 3-5 books available on that particular topic.
