I have 2 children who will be in 6th and 4th next school year. We have been doing a mix of Apologia/AIG science together for the past few years, just covering what we were interested in at the time. I am planning on having them both do Apologia General for 7th and Apologia Physical for 8th, mostly independently. So, I have one year left with them together. We have covered all the major science topics except for chemistry/physics, which we have only looked at briefly in other books like history (Wright brothers, Archimedes, etc).
My original plan was to have the 6th grader do Apologia Chemistry/Physics independently to get her ready for doing General in 7th and because she hasn’t had any exposure to that part of science yet. And then, do the Apologia Land Animals book with the 4th grader since we haven’t done that book yet. We did the AIG animal study with them both so that we could cover more animals in a shorter time than what Apologia was covering. But, the 6th grader LOVES animals and wants to do that book with us. That’s really her only interest in science.
So, I’m not sure if I should make her do the chemistry/physics or let her do the land animals. I could still have her do it more independently, but then she misses covering chemistry/physics before getting to general/physical. I know that general/physical covers both of those topics. Is once enough to go through that before high school?
Or I could have the 4th grader do chemistry/physics too. But, that seems young to be doing that book from what I’ve read on that.
What’s your advice on this? My gut says to let her do what she’s interested in for one more year, knowing that she WILL cover it in general/physical. But, then I worry that she will have a harder time in general/physical if she doesn’t at least have a little knowledge of it. Ugh, decisions, decisions. 😉
I have not used either of the resources you mentioned, but I do know that the Apologia chemistry/physics book is fairly new (just came out within the last year or two). So, that would mean that lots of students have gone on to using Apologia’s upper level science courses without the chemistry/physics background. Hope that relieves some of your anxiety. 😉
