I will be starting the SCM approach this year with my 1st grade DD and preK/K DD (she is scholastically ready for K and usually wants to do it, planning on doing K but not pushing the issue, if she finishes she finishes, she’s 4).
I am planning to try and keep science combined for them throughout the years. This year I am thinking of doing science 2 days a week. The first day I will read Burgess Bird Book for Children and giving them a coloring sheet of the bird in the story and the second day we will review the bird from the story and add our picture to a notebook and write down facts about that bird that we got from the story or have looked up elsewhere (where they live, what they eat, etc). Then at the end of the year they’ll have their own little bird book of facts. There are 45 chapters, so this alone would take the whole year.
Does this sound okay or should I be doing something else?
I don’t have much input for you other than to say… It sounds wonderfully fun to me. I can’t wait til my little ones are a little bigger and I might take your idea. 🙂
Sounds like an enjoyable year of bird studies. You might also want to start an ongoing bird list to keep track of all the birds you actually see and identify live in your backyard or wherever. Then as you come to them in your studies, you could mark those in a special way in the notebooks.
