I am planning for next year and I wanted to get some ideas for teaching my (will be) 3rd grade son and my 1st grade daughter in science. We did the 106 days of Creation this year and loved it. I was thinking about doing the Apologia Science but wanted to get some other ideas of other good resources to use. Any advice would be appreciated.
We are doing the Zoology 1 this year with my 3rd and 5th grader. Both have gotten a lot out of it but have indicated that they would like more hands-on science projects.
So, one thing that we’ve done in the past and I’m trying to schedule in again for variety is to ‘do a book’ for science. They select a book from the library and we ‘do’ it until it’s either done, or we’ve gotten all that we want from it. It has helped with the boys’ desires to blow things up and create huge messes. And, if it can be applied to the days of Creation, it becomes another lesson in Creation Science, which we try to teach in one way or another each year. See this link for help in laying out a curriculum ‘By Creation Day:’ http://www.lifetimebooksandgifts.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/st_main.html?p_catid=19&sid=APTMcX1zVJx8EFf-58108083449.0e
While the Zoology does not supply the fun messes, I love the way she writes and explains things in small chunks that even I can digest! I guess the best recommendation comes from the children who have asked to do Zoology 2 after this one!
A friend gave me Christian Kids Explore Biology by Stephanie Redmond. My kids LOVED it. They are 2nd, 4th, and 6th grade this year. We had hands on time, reading time, and quiz time. (They got to thepoint they quizzed each other.) Anyway, there are 8 units and they cover everything from cells to water creatures. All of my kids enjoyed it, and I felt like I could teach all of them at the same time without boring my 6th grader and going over my 2nd grader’s head. Hope that helps.
