I feel like a rookie asking this question, but school is only taking my daughter and hour to an hour and a half on some days. She is in 3rd grade and a diligent worker so I think it’s fine, but I wanted to ask if that seems way to short?

Here is what she was assigned today:

    Scripture Memory

Bible – She reads a devotion or chapters in the bible

Pictures Study – We looked at a Cassatt painting and narration

Math – Abeka Grade 3, I’m only marking the essentials so that it’s not busywork.

Hymn Study – Listening to Amazing Grace with words in front of her

Science – Chapter in a James Herriot book & narration

Copywork – copying lines from our scripture memory verse Psalm 46

English – worked on accept, except, there, they’re, their

    Gardening – watered the plants

Spelling – practiced some recently misspelled words

She’s hitting a lot of stuff in a day and I think that is the beauty of CM. Does this seem ok to ya’ll?

I am sort of a rookie also..but it sounds good to me. I am like you I have a 3rd grader and a 1st grader and we do all of our work except for read alouds in an hour or so. But then we spend the rest of the day reading, playing outside, playing games (uno, dominos), weeding the garden and taking care of the animals. That seems to be a pretty well rounded education if you ask me. Oh I forgot about the chores and making meals which I am sure all of us do with our kiddos.

I am interested to hear what others have to say. I’m pleased with the length but maybe I’m alittle on the “slacker” side of homeschooling. 🙂

So glad you posted this. It is something that I wonder also. My children will finish all there independent studies in about an hour maybe an hour and a half. then we do some history, science re alouds together so we are done in 3 hours or less. Glad to know we are not the only family who on normal days is done early.

It sounds like you are doing fine. Does she have literature books for other days? Don’t forget to take into account her time spent on chores, time outside, time reading on her own, etc. My son who is in 3rd grade this year spends about the same amount of time on “official school” activities, although in my case I have to spread time with him around an inbetween the older children. I do have him read free reading books for an hour in the afternoon, and do chores and time outdoors.

It sounds like you are doing fine. Enjoy it now while you can. 🙂 High school takes a bit more time from the day. 🙂

Seems fine to me, too. I’m guessing you have some literture included in your day that you aren’t considering as school work.

And life itself is a great learning tool. It’s okay to live life without a nose in a book. You’re doing fine.

My 8yo ds takes about an hour to finish his independant studies too. I’ve often wondered if he was too speedy. 😉 Glad you posted this question and sounds like you’re doing great- keep up the good work!

    Blessings,

    Heather
