I am in the process of coming back to my CM roots. Long story.
My older children were very close in age, and it was very easy to create a CM schedule with them. My younger children are in 2 different skill levels and developmental stages. My 9 yo is transitioning to doing written narrations and my 6yo is still working on developing the habit of attention.
How should I schedule their skill subjects? Do I block schedule skill subjects and family subjects?
Welcome back to CM:) Have you seen the sample schedules on the home page under planning? Here’s one sample: http://simplycharlottemason.com/planning/daily/blockdetdaily/. I bought the “Planning Your CM Education” sold here. It’s a great tool with tons of sample schedules with varying ages of kids, varying schedule types, etc. I basically have 1) family time block; 2) a time where I work with my oldest to get her going and then she works independently; 3) while I’m working with my oldest, my youngest has some things he can do independently, and then I’ll work with him. They usually each have something they can work at independently while I’m working with the other. My youngest can sometimes go play quietly or outside while I finish with the oldest, if needed. They have a daily schedule sheet (I type in from the CM planner), so they know what they are supposed to do each day. Hope that was clear:) Blessings, Gina
I did see those schedules. My newly turned 6 does not have any subjects that she can work on independently. She is also a talker.
What I did today was to do a block of skill subjects with the 9 yo. I then did a block of family subjects and almost got through everything that I had planned before the 6 yo started losing interest. Last, I did a block of skill subjects with the 6 yo. So tomorrow, I need to break up the family block into 2 shorter blocks so I can keep the 6 yo interested. In addition, I need to work with the 6yo independently on narration skills.
I guess I have to do this the old=fashioned way. Tweak and modify until I find what works for my family.

Maybe you could do the 6 year old’s work FIRST since that child loses interest sooner. Possibly work one-on-with the 6 year old while the 9 year old does any independent work (copywork, math, read, etc.). Then a snack or outdoor break. Then family work that involves the 6 year old. Then, let the 6 year old GO PLAY and be a kid while you continue with your 9 year old.
