    Hello!
I would like some input. I want my children to read more. My daughter loves to read so it is not really a problem for her. However, my 13 year old son…well, not so much. I have tried two different methods for reading his assigned reading…one for time and one for # of pages. When he reads for time, he doesn’t get very much done. However, if he reads for # of pages or # of chapters, he rushes through trying to get it done. He is a good reader so that is not the problem. It is also difficult now to track the number of pages he reads as both my kids have a Barnes & Noble nook so there are multiple “e-book pages” to make a single “book page”.
Any input would be great! Thank you so much!

Is it a matter of him not liking what he’s reading?  My DD didn’t really care of The Golden Goblet, but she adores that Little House on the Prairie series and has actually started laying in bed reading at night (this is a change because she really isn’t a reader).  I think the key is getting them interested in some books they really love and don’t want to put down.  HTH’s!

P.S.  I should add, my children have assigned reading based on the SCM module reading plan and also any other reading that would go along with their school work, plus I assign one chapter daily of reading in a book of their choosing (within reason of course, if I don’t approve of it, then they must pick another).

I think they should have a lot of free choice of literature in many formats at first.  When the bug hits and their reading takes off then you can move it gently to better and better things or things you want read.  I allowed those awful graphic novels (nothing inappropriate subject wise), magazines, newspapers etc. etc. to get over the “hump” of resistance.  Once we were past that we just sailed.  My children know my expectations and my boundaries so we didn’t have any trouble with them wanting to read something too mature or of really bad quality.  If they did come across something, then it gave us a chance to confirm our beliefs or whatever.  There might have been a touch of twaddle in there for a short time, but it worked.  I have two voracious readers now!

I think children need to gain confidence in reading first and then will naturally want to read better and better works of literature.  Especially if that is all they can find in the house!

Pam, on the Nook you could assign so many chapters and that would solve the page problem. If you are using the SCM modules then the reading assignment is already assigned mostly by chapters.
