Often times a change is as good as a break. Make sure to vary the part of the brain being used throughout your school time.
We have one scheduled break of 15m that sometimes happens. With four widely spaced kids, it isn’t an everyday occurance here. If at all possible, we go outside for a brisk walk or a jump on the trampoline or other active pursuit.
We take two breaks. The first is 15 min after a required amount of work is done. Unless it is raining we go outside and the kids run around a bit. If it is raining they will just play with their toys. The second break is for lunch and is usually about 30-45 min. We do about one more hour of school work then do chores. This brings us to about 2:00-3:00 when they can then go outside and play for the rest of the afternoon. I don’t have a problem with it derailing the school day. As long as no electronics are turned on my ds is ready to go back to work when told. There might have been some consequences when I first started with breaks but my ds quickly learned to no abuse his privileges. I only have one schooling at the time so we will see how things change next year when my dd starts doing some work as well.
We have snack break scheduled for 30 minutes at 10am. Lunch is at noon. The kids are done with school by then (6th grade on down). They can do anything not electronic (play, read, craft, rest) during break.
If a child has been particularly diligent and starts working early (before 8:30am) they may have a 10-15 minute break when all items on their list but one are done. This happened today for the 2nd and 1st grader. Mostly what we do is have lots of short lessons so there is a variety and they choose what order to do their lessons.
We don’t have “scheduled” breaks. I keep my eye on the kids and fit them in when needed. There comes a point when they aren’t listening as well or getting a bit restless. That’s when I make time for a break. We have a general order for our day…some subjects we do in the morning, and others are done in the afternoon. However, our breaks aren’t done in between certain subjects each day, more on an as-needed basis.
Generally we have snack breaks mid-morning and mid-afternoon. I also use PE as a break…usually in the early afternoon. We also take a few mini-breaks for laundry, ringing phones, a crying toddler, or just because we need a break! 😉 I try not to spend more than 20-30 minutes for any one breaktime.
