We get into a rut of Bible/History/Geo, Spelling Wisdom, Apologia Swimming Creatures, MUS Gamma, Read Aloud, and IF we remember and I’m intentional then one of the following: poem, composer, artist, handicraft. Typically, we are done in 1 hour. I feel like we are not spending enough time in subjects but I also know it may be that struggle we all face. During this time, my son is playing, doing a worksheet (he asks to do it to have schoolwork). My daughter does independent reading of her Bible or another literature book prior to bed.
Can you guys share how much time you would expect to spend in school time with these two ages? I’d like to do more reading and start SLOWLY Delightful Reading with my son. In the New Year, I want to be more disciplined of giving my kids more intentional attention. Otherwise, they are playing and doing chores the remainder of the day.
Thanks for tips, insight and maybe just some inspiration.
I have a 9 1/2 yr old son (currently 3rd grade level) and an almost 6 yr old son (Kindergarten level). We read aloud around 2 hours a day, generally 1-1 1/2 hours in the morning and then the rest at other, none scheduled times in the day. Our morning read aloud includes history, Bible, habit training and fiction (both boys choose 1 book fiction book for me to read aloud each morning and I read 1-2 chapters from each depending on chapter length). My older son reads aloud to me at some point in the day as well. After read aloud time, we take a break with snack and the boys play outside or inside with toys. This about 15-20 minutes. Then we do table work. This consists of math, copywork/handwriting and spelling. Then we try to rotate each day with either poetry, hymn, picture or nature study (this does not always happen). Table work takes no more than an hour for us. So we generally spend about 2-2 1/2 hours doing school. I see this lengthening as the children get older, but for now I think it is just what they need.
