I feel like I’ve read somewhere (a book, this forum or SCM website) how many minutes to allot to each subject, as well as how many days per week for each subject. I am trying to organize my terms and am struggling to know how often, say, my 3rd grader should be doing copywork, or how many days per week. Please help me find this info! My kids are 8th, 5th, and 3rd grade. I want more order than we had last year in our first homeschool year, so I’m working towards having more structure to our days — hoping to get to the point of organizing our actual day here soon.
I go with the general rule of thumb of about 5 minutes per grade leevl per subject at the most. So math for a 3rd grader should be 15 minutes at the most, 25 for the 5th grader and 40 minutes at the most for the 8th grader. Copywork never takes my kids more than 5 minutes, except for my 7th grader who is working on his Book of Mottos. That generally takes him about 15 minutes to think about what he wants to write, search where it is, and copy it.
As far as how often per week I do subjects, I guess it depends on the subject. Math is almost always daily, or at least 4 times a week if I’m doing a lighter schedule. Spelling for my 7th grader is 1 – 3x a week, whereas my 4th grader is 3-5x a week because she really struggles. Things like Nature Study, composer study, picture study etc. are once a week.
This blog post contains links to charts that show how much time the PNEU schools (set up by CM) allotted to each subject. The whole series of posts has been very helpful to me (and I think many others) in figuring out a good balance for subjects.
Wow! Thanks jmac17 for the link! Reading that series of blog posts has really helped me with tweaking my plans for this year!
I do have a couple questions for those who have more experience with understanding the subject names mentioned in the PNEU school timetables. What do the following actually mean?
Object Lesson
Natural History
Physical Geography (vs. plain-old Geography)
