We just made our first salt dough map. It was a little challenging for me! The children enjoyed making the salt dough and playing with it before we embarked on cartography. I used a relief map of Israel from Wikipedia for us to refer to as we shaped it. One hint to anyone who plans to do this – don’t completely carve out the lakes, seas, etc. After we finished and set it aside, I looked ahead to the next map lesson in Joshua to Malachi, and we are supposed to paint the lakes and water next week! So, I quickly went back and added in enough dough to those low areas so there would be something to paint! Ok. Just wanted to share. My children enjoyed the whole episode!
You can make it whatever size you like. The SCM guide reccomends requesting a new pizza box from a pizzeria. That is what I did. Our waiter brought us a small pizza box, so that is what we are using. While I had thought I’d prefer the large size, I think the smaller one will be easier to store. This activity was our geography and art for the day.
We made a salt dough map of Egypt last year. It was a lot of fun for me and my boys. They were ages 7, 11 and 12 at the time. By the way, I called our local Dominos pizza and they gave us three large pizza boxes for free. The manager said she loves to support local homeschooling families. I thought that was so cool.
We made the Israel salt dough map last week! They were very individualized. I had been saving small boxes just for this. We’re looking forward to painting them in the next week or so.
