We have Rosetta Stone Spanish. I feel like it is helpful in learning conversational, but does not teach the “mechanics” of another language.
As for scheduling I would schedule a lesson 2 – 3 times/week. Some were a bit longer, but usually 10 – 15 min was average time spent. RS progresses through each lessons, so you don’t have to do any work, just click on the next lesson
It has the voice recognition software which is really good, but my DD struggled with it a bit last year (she was in 2nd grade). She did it more for fun, but because of her tone and pronunciation of some sounds she would get frustrated with not being able to have her answers being “right”. She started doing it again last month for fun and had success. We just started using the Spanish program from Cherrydale Press, and the kids think it is really fun. I think we will focus on that, but continue to use RS as some fun practice when the kids want to.
I have a friend that used RS as an adult two years ago, she does many mission trips to South America and she said it was an invaluable tool to help her learn the language and have conversations with people. It really “kick started” her ability to learn another language.
edit – I originally purchased it to use for myself. Our area has a high population of Spanish (Mexico) speaking residents. My husband works with quite a few. We both feel like it is not only a great skill to have another language, but would also be used regularly. We wanted the conversational skills. I started using it and then got busy
. I plan to get back into it this year though. I really do want to learn another language.
