I picked up two books by Syme at a booksale – Balboa: Finder of the Pacific and Francisco Pizarro: Finder of Peru. There were more there, but I didn’t know if they were worth me going back. They look to be about a 1st – 3rd grade type book, larger print, a few pictures, larger type.
One thing that concerns me is that there are no chapter divisions – it’s just one long chapter. The books I brought home are 93 and 96 pages long- I’d assume that’s the general length off the others that they had in the series.
Does anyone know if they’re something I want in my library? (I am getting so many books and running out of space that I feel I have to be very choosy about what books stay.)
Syme’s books are excellent. Full of excitement and adventure. Of course, he wrote mostly about explorers so I guess that’s what their lives were like, but I highly recommend them for younger to middle grades, especially reluctant reader boys.
We read one he wrote about Henry Hudson when my oldest was in 1st grade. He’s in 8th – and still he recalls tons of details about this book. He LOVED it!
We have Captain Cook and would love to have some more! BTW, you can find some of them online at openlibrary.com for free to check out. I pretty sure I saw some there in the past.
