    Hi Robin,

I have an opportunity to buy Foster’s Columbus book in hardcover for $10, ex-library, used but in good shape. What do you think? I feel like I remember you saying sometime recently that the older hardcovers are better than the newer paperbacks. Is the content the same?

Thanks for any advice you can offer. 🙂

    Jenn

Jenn I would say snap them up….hardcovers hold value better than soft covers any day…don’t you think Robin? I always hold on to my hardcovers, they have true value.

Linda I think you’re right… I know my two paperback Foster books are not holding up well even though I covered them. Ok, I’ll go for it. Thanks 🙂

If the book is in pretty good condition, I think it is well worth it. Lucky you to find one…Linda:)))

Got it just now. So happy! Nothing like a good old hardback book in great condition at a great price to make this girl happy. 🙂

Absolutely!!!  And a good deal to boot!  I have all the Fosters in hardback (most bought at a library sale for $1) and, although I appreciate Beautiful Feet and others for reprinting these gems, they are never the same as the good old hardcovers.  Newer hc’s however are another story.  If they are glued instead of stitched, many of them are no better than the pb’s.

Yes that is a good point Robin – the hard backs I have collected over the years are all stitched – there is something about a lovely old hardback treasure that has been so well made. In England I had the pleasure of visiting a book binder who still stiched all the books, it was fascinating to watch, and from then on when I wandered the old book stores in England I looked for those specifically. Well done Jenn, you got a good book.

OOOH!  I would LOVE to wander through some of those old book stores!!

I love reading from those old books.  And the books printed before WWII have such wonderful thick paper.  Then paper had to be rationed and it all changed.  I even had a book by…oh…it just left me… but the author apologized for the poor quality of the paper since the war.  So many treasures.

I would love to go with you Sue, there was a great little shop in my home town in a half timbered building with a little maze of rooms all with old books, nothing modern at all….I got all my HE Marshall and Arabella Buckley books in there along with 4 Van Loon books….that was jackpot day for me, and I was so excited to find them all nestled among the shelves. The man who owned the place was so thrilled to know that someone still wanted books like those for their children, so I think we made each other’s day. I went back many times and picked up bits and pieces but never had such a grand day as that again….a few of the books swam away in the hurricane, but not all, and I still have some – but that was a loss to me I must admit – I know it is just a material thing, but book lovers will understand, that it was hard to lose some of those really old finds. I still have all four Van Loons, a couple of Arabella Buckleys, and one HE Marshall, but the others are now being read by the fishes.

Just think how educated those little fishes must be! =)

Linda, Everytime I hear about another one of your treasures like that I feel sick inside. =(  Like you say, I know that everything most important survived, but still…my heart goes pitty-pat thinking of the loss.

I think that when you find a jewel like that you have to celebrate with like-minded people who appreciate it too!  So – Congratulations, Jenn!!  =)

Oh Linda!!  How heartbreaking!!!!  Yes, I completely understand that they are material possessions but, for me, they’re old friends. Wouldn’t that man be thrilled to know that there are libraries in this country that exist to preserve these old books and put them into eager hands!

We are very happy for you, Jenn.  Now on to the next acquisition!!
