We are doing Robert Louis Stevenson for our poet study this year and i am wondering if there is a biography on him that would be reasonable to read to a 6 yr old??  I saw one on amazon but it didn’t look like it would be appropriate for a child…

I’ve been wondering the same thing for our 6 yr old.  I thought maybe we’d just read the short bio in the intro to Child’s Garden of Verses, as I hadn’t found anything better…I’ll keep my eye on this post.

    Hi April,

My young children and I enjoyed reading Robert Louis Stevenson: Storyteller and Adventurer by Katharine E. Wilkie when we studied his poetry.

It’s out of print, but you can find used copies on Amazon:

My daughter read that book last year and enjoyed it.  She learned a lot about RLS. 🙂

And if you are interested in a biography for you to read (not to the children) I’d highly recommend Under the Wide and Starry Sky by Nancy Horan.  His story is told through the eyes of his wife and it is very good.

There is also short bio in the back of our copy of A Child’s Garden of Verses, classic illustrated edition, complied by Cooper Edens.
