I’m switching to RightStart this year with a level A and Level B. The 2nd edition will not be out until late in the year. I’m trying to decide with several children to still go through if it is worth waiting on. Has anyone seen a real need for the change to more manipulatives and whatever else they think needs improvement on?
Level A is already out. Level B is due in the fall, as mentioned. Now – this piece of advice is based on edition 1 – but you could probably start your Level B student out in Level A, going faster, then skip a few lessons when you get Level B…. if you needed to start right away…
Personally, I’d like to use the manipulatives more, and it is great that the new edition does that.
The other thing – and I don’t know if this has been improved or not – is that there are a few places in the 1st edition that tend to be walls – as in the student is doing fine and then suddenly is struggling. There aren’t many – but it looks like there is a bit of a leap. This is about lesson 68 in Level B, and one again around lesson 90 in Level C…. These are common spots that you hear about on the RS yahoo group. I imagine that this has been noted and fixed…
I’d like to do the Edition 2, but I have children in Level C and B (and one too young for anything…) so it isn’t an option.
Suzukimom–Do you know if there is a place I can download a sample lesson on A ed 2? I looked on the website and did not see one.
Since I am in level A with my oldest, I really think ed 2 may be the way to go. I am hoping that at my convention in June I can preorder level B ed 2 to save on shipping.
Honestly if I were just starting I’d go 2nd edition. It was in the works before common core, is supposed to use the manipulatives more, and hopefully goes past the walls a bit easier.
That said, I went to our local convention excited that RS would be there and I’d be able to look at it (more curiosity than anything…) – and the representative forgot it at their house. ARGH
Bummer about your convention. Our convention is in June and I am going to call them to see if they will be having a session on ed 2. The release of B will be about the time we will be done with A. I am excited about using the manipulatives more.
