Right Start Math – Time Commitment?

I am looking into Right Start Math for my 4 year old and 6 year old sons. It looks like a great, hands on way to learn math (and fun)! But my question is about the time commitment? Are the lessons longer than 20 minutes? Are they scripted, or is it just a bundle of activities for you to choose from?

I know from my previous experience that a 45 minute math lesson just isn’t going to work for my boys… I am hoping that the lessons are structured enough that I know what to do, without being redundant and taking forever to complete. Thanks!

I just started A with my 5yo (will be 6 in Dec) a couple of months ago.  He loves RS!!  Especially the games.  It is scripted with what to say (underlined).

As far as time spent, Each lesson takes me about 2-3 days doing about 10 minutes a day.  The games are key with RS and he loves to play them so some days we just play games and I don’t introduce a new concept.

There are some lessons we flew through and some we had to slow way down to let him digest.  You can also play the games later in the day so math is not drawn out.  I think there are samples on RS website so you can see how they are structured.

The lessons in Levels B and above could and do take longer than 20 minutes to complete.  However, many of us who use it will set a timer for however long we want to spend doing math.  When the timer goes off we stop the lesson and resume with it the next day.  It may take a little longer to get through the level but it worked well for us.

The lessons are scripted and I felt so much more confident teaching because it sounded like I knew what I was doing, even if I didn’t.  But honestly the way the lessons are done, I found myself understanding the concepts so I gained a lot of confidence.  It’s so much easier to teach the concept when you understand it. 🙂

Thank you ladies! It is good to know that it is scripted (for the math illiterate – me 🙂 and that I can do 20 minutes at a time or break it up and add more later in the day. Sounds like a good fit for us – I am excited!

We find that many of the level B and C lessons can be done in 20 minutes – some are closer to 30.   I am not consistant on it, but generally I set the timer for 30 minutes – if we are done early, we play a math game for the rest of the time.  If the lesson will go over (very rare) – we finish it the next day.

Level A we generally do a lesson (so far) in about 15 minutes.

You are planning to do the boys seperately?  Level A would be great for the 4yo (as desired…) – but the 6yo would probably be ready for Level B  (They both start at the beginning, but B goes faster.)

2 other notes – there is a great Yahoo group for RS – I’d join it, as there is all sorts of great info there.  And, there are sometimes times when the student comes to a “wall” or “roadblock” where they suddenly really start strugging.  At that point, take a break from the lessons and play the games a lot instead.  Usually after a bit of time, they can continue a lot easier.  Level B has one that many kids hit around lesson 65ish (I think – that number is by memory….)   It is not uncommon for Level B and Level C combined to take 3 years instead of 2.
