I’m thinking of switching to right start for my son (6 1/2). I have been using Rays Arithmatic and I like the living math aspect of it, but we have done all the addition problems and he doesn’t quite get it. My question is can I just get the work book and teach from that. We already have the game kit, an abacus, clock, and math cubes. It would definately be nicer on the budget to just by the teachers manual and not the kit since we have half of the items in the kit already. Is there anything else I would need to teach with that I don’t have and is in the kit?
Ruth, I’m assuming your talking Level A in RightStart? Perhaps B? B has 2 things that A doesn’t have (a math balance and place value cards with pictures of ones, 10s and 100s).
You do need both the teacher’s manual and the student workbook.
You will need some money (plasic coins or real money).
It looks like you’ll also need some place value cards, but you can make those on your own. PM me if you’re not sure how to do that.
Does your game kit have the Corners cards? The time cards? Coin cards? I’m pretty sure it does, but just wanted to check.
How about a geoboard?
We use the colored tiles A LOT in the lessons, but you use other things. Often you’re learning a pattern so if you have something that you can teach ABABA or ABCABC you’re okay (an ABABA car, action figure, car, action figure, car. ABCABC could be cheerio, raisin, peanut, cheerio, raisin, peanut). Sometimes you’ll need to group things. I have a large collection of weird erasers and little foam shapes I’ve collected over the years and we use those instead of tiles a lot.
The only other thing I think you would need are tally sticks (popsicle/craft sticks) which you can buy anywhere.
We love RS and have been using it for 4 or so years. If you have any other questions, please let me know.
Heather
