My daughter (who is now 8) has been through RS C and is now in D. RS has never gone smoothly for us. She amazes me at times, so I know this is a great prgram. However, she dreads the teaching lessons with me and the each mental word problem seems to REALLY drain her. She begs me to let her do the math on her own (I supplement with Math Mammoth, which she seems to like. I hesitate to switch programs because I know this is a great one. One more issue is that she often makes slight mistakes in her adding and subtracting. Is this normal for RS or have I possibly pushed her too far, developmentally speaking? Any help would be appreciated.
Does she like the games. If she needs extra practice you could incorporate more of the games. That would inforce the subtraction and addition to help her get them right everytime. Maybe you could just leave one day that you normally would do a lesson and just play the games that are in the game book. I had been to a conference and one of the RS people really encouraged more of this at her booth. I think by nature in the program we forget this part unless it is in the lesson plan itself.
I have been doing RS with my son and are in D also. It is a wonderful program. I myself am learning so many skills that I never was taught in school. I did notice that ds does get tired of too many ways to solve a problem. He has found what works for him. My ds is also older than your dd. I didn’t start RS B Book until he was 7 because I started with Miquon. So now he is 9 in Book D. But this better late than early is working well for him. Just wanted to mention this to encourage not rushing is ok. It is important to understand each concept.
I am sure extra games would help. I have to admit, I HATE THE GAMES!! It’s hard when you have a 4 year old who isn’t ready to play them yet (but really wants to.) I know, it’s not about me, it’s about her.
Slowing down is something I am also going to try. I have heard others say they have done this with great success.
