My DS4 uses his right and left hand interchangeably. When practicing writing should I insist on him choosing one and sticking with it, encourage him to write with each, or just ignore it completely? It seems like he uses his left first an more often but easily switches to his right one. I don’t see a difference in skill or writing quality between the two.

My dd5.5 is ambidextrous. Can use each interchangably. I simply let her choose. Most often she uses her right for handwriting and math.

My son is also showing handedness later than most children; for him, it is related to other motor delays. I was advised not to encourage him one way or the other. He will eventually select for himself (or end up ambidextrous!)

I agree. Don’t pressure him. He is only 4, and there is no real reason to force handedness.

Two of my kids did this right up until the need for writing fluently forced them to choose (for them at about 7yo). One of them ended up a lefty, and the other a righty who can use a baseball bat or gun with either hand well. Let them work it out for themselves and they will choose the hand that is most expedient for them to use.
