This is the first year I planned out our learning days. In the fall I planned six weeks of studies, one week off, then six more weeks of study. Next week is the planned week off (though my boys don’t know about it). The problem is things have come up over the past six weeks that kept us from the planned work, things like illness and a trip for me to NYC. I feel like we’ve missed too much to take the whole week off. I’m thinking about figuring out exactly what it is we’ve missed in reading and math, finishing that up the first three days of next week and then taking two days off. I could just forego it and just view it as a ‘catch up’ week. I had envisioned we’d spend time at community fun things (children’s museums and a trampoline center) so the kids would be playing and I could do planning for the upcoming six weeks. We’re only doing a few subjects as it is: reading, math, history, a tiny bit of artist study and science reading (not experiments). I’m not sure what I should do with next week so I thought I’d run it by folks who has done planned days off before to get your opinion. Thanks!
I would say that since you were thinking of using the fun time as an opportunity to plan the next six weeks that you should make sure that you enjoy those activities and get that planning done – could you spend an hour or two in the mornings catching up, and then go have fun? Maybe packing a picnic and a book to take on your outings – enjoy lunch, then do an extra reading before going in the museum. If there is an art or science museum that would cover those subjects they may enjoy narrating their experience. I think you’ll have time to balance some catch up and some fun!
