I know it’s old news, but I finally got around to reading it this fall.  If you haven’t made time to read it, I strongly recommend that you do so.  I reviewed it here and thought I’d share.  Enjoy the rest of the afternoon!  🙂

I know that EVERYONE loves this book, but I”m wondering if there was anyone else that couldn’t make it out of the first chapter… it was just so terrible that I stopped.  I like challenging books, and I didn’t try very hard with this one, but I would try again, if someone out there says – Yes, the first chapter was brutal, but after that it gets better.  Of course this wouldn’t be the first time where I was the odd one out. Undecided

(And by terrible, I don’t mean poorly written, though I wasn’t in love with her writing style… I just mean devastating and written in a way to draw out the horror.)

I’m with you – I wasn’t all that thrilled.  And I did read it all the way through….but I’m a bit of a Pollyanna to begin with, so I don’t know.  I just always find something to be grateful for….  I was left more heavy hearted than encouraged.

I only made it about half way through, but for me it was more of a writing-style issue. I just couldn’t follow it. Which surprised me because I really like her blog and so I really wanted to like the book. Just couldn’t. So…you’re not the only one.

Laura – that’s EXACTLY my feeling.  It was just so depressing and I don’t have much time to read and I read right before bed and I thought, if I’m going to read something, it can’t be this!

Jen – I can relate to what you’re saying too, it’s been a while since I read it, but it seemed too flowery or poetical or something…

So nice to know I’m not alone, but thankful for all the lives that have been touched by it.

I also had a writing style issue with this author.  I think I’d like her personally . . . but for some reason I just cannot read her writing.  We had a similar problem with the Geography books of hers.  So no, you aren’t the only one, but I’ve sure heard lots of very positive things about it.

Oh dear, I have it on my kindle but have not gotten around to looking at it yet. I always read before sleep, I have enough on my mind without being depressed by a book, what shall I do??? lol-mixed reviews here so I am not sure what I will think. I did not take to her Geography books, but eventually I guess I will break down and read it….Linda

The first chapter is devastating.  I cried and cried and my husband BEGGED me to put down the book.  But I couldn’t!  She was addressing the same questions that had plagued my mind for years.

I am extremely empathetic…it’s a curse really.  I stopped watching the news years ago because it would keep me up at night crying…if I think about the orphans, I become paralyzed.  And my mind goes to…Where is Jesus?  When someone would say, “The Lord will protect us.” I always thought, “Well…He didn’t protect the child who was raped last night.” (transparent moment for me…sorry!)

Her story…her journey…took me there.  The questions I was too scared to ask and too embarrassed to admit I had.

Furthermore, the in depth, deep, revelations she had (like about God existing in the spaces…the empty spaces where we stop and slow time…by giving thanks)…they amazed me.  And she had several.  But it is all very abstract…some people do better with concrete writers…concrete examples.  I tend to be bored by them.  lol

And, her writing style is POETRY to me.  I love it, love it, love it!  lol  I think that is just a personal preference.

My MIL didn’t particularly care for this book either.  But mine is highlighted, dog eared, and I can’t wait to read it again! lol

3littlegirls I will let you know when I get around to reading it, maybe I will be like you and love it….I appreciate the review though and the other comments, we all are different and enjoy different things – nice to have different opinions. Thanks! :)))

The writing is different, very deep and thoughtful, in a poetic way. Have any of you read Notes From the Tilt-a-Whirl by ND Wilson? It’s seems similar to me in regards to being sort of “out of the box” style of writing. Either you really like it, or you really don’t! 🙂

The first chapter was bad IMO. But once I got past it, I felt it was a good read.

Ya know, I think it must be a difference between those of us who prefer the more poetical style of writing and those of us who like more concrete. I am DEFINETLY one of those who prefers things to be concrete! I’ve never cared much for poetry in general, although reading it with my kids has helped! Ah well, different strokes for different folks. I think the message of the book was great, at least based on all that I’ve read about it elsewhere, and I’m glad that it has blessed a lot of people. But just wasn’t my style.

Well, I LOVE poetry, and I love imagery in writing.  I can travel “out there” with many writers–Annie Dillard being one, she’s a little mind-bending but I can follow her.  I just have to confess that I have no earthly idea what Voskamp is ever talking about.  She could be speaking Urdu for all I can understand what she is saying.  Plus she manages to make me feel condescended to the whole time.  I want to pull my hair.   LOL

LOL, Bookworm, that is so funny.  I really enjoy poetry, especially now that we are reading more of it, but I doubt I would enjoy that type of book.  At some point I just want someone to tell me what they’re trying to say.

I did read portions from the link above, just to see how it was written.  If I can find it at an inexpensive price I may check it out more to have a better idea of what it’s all about.
