I’m working to develop a simple middle school class for our co op.  The class is one hour in length.

I’d like to have a script that the students will read together (in small portions at home) and discuss each week when they meet.  After discussion they will draw a character from a jar, prop from a box, and have some fun acting out that portion of the script.

Do you have any suggestions for a script? Any that may have some type of study guide to accompany it? I’d love for this to be as student-led as possible, but this age group may need a little help initiating discussion questions.

    Thanks. 🙂

I don’t have ideas for a script for you but I wanted to respond because I have asked a similar question a couple of years ago on here about putting on a play with my kids and never got a response. Drama doesn’t seem to be a big CM thing.

What I did was take a book (Jack in the Beanstalk was one of the ones we did ) and sort of made my own script. I got many books from the library on plays and theater but never really found anything I liked.

I also taught a drama class for our co-op last year but the first semester we only did games and situations so the kids got used to speaking and acting on stage. I was going to them put on a play for the second semester but our co-op ended up taking a semester off and so it never got done. (Sorry this was so long and dint help you any) ?

Years ago I performed in ‘Little Women’ adapted from the novel by Marisha Chamberlain. The running time was about an hour and it had several short scenes.

If you google you should be able to find companies that have catalogs of scripts. That will help you look for plays with certain number of characters, or how many male/female roles – if that is important to you.

Little Women had 7 female/4 male. There are a lot of strange plays out there – so I suggest Little Women because it is a classic that some of the students may be familiar with, or may be inspired to read.

Right now I’m looking at The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, though I’m unsure if the script is good or not. There aren’t reviews on the one I found on Amazon.

The other is a script of the book, The Westing Game. I just borrowed the book from the library, as I’ve never read it before.

    Any thoughts on those titles?

Unfortunately, this is very last-minute. Our original plan was to put on a full production with this group but we’ve had some changes and no longer have the support necessary for that endeavor. I’m needing to get something ordered ASAP. *gulp*

Thanks for the suggestions so far! I love Little Women, but I know the teen boys will not. 😉
