Yes, I could use language arts – but I really don’t want to….. Language Arts to me is a madre up term by schools to encompass reading, writing, grammar, spelling, etc etc etc….
Reading Instruction is more versitile in other ways – for example, if you want to use the McGuffey or similar readers for elocution practice. Is there a downside to changing it?
Changing it is a bigger deal than it seems on the surface. Here are the kinds of questions we have to ask.
“Beginner Reading” and “Reading Instruction” do mean slightly different things. So although the change might do what you want, would it be meaningful to everyone else who also uses it? What about others who have used the term being confused with an unexpected change to their schedule? Do we pay the programmer to find everyone who has used that subject, contact them, and ask for their preference before making a change? Or do we change it and notify everyone of the change and include a “sorry if if no longer meets your needs” message?
So why not just add another subject for it?
We have intentionally limited the number of subjects to keep the menu from becoming unweildy. We know that what is there is not always perfect for a very detailed description. But we also know that there are enough generic, overarching terms to pretty much do the job for now.
So we would be unlikely to just add that one because it’s too similar to others or covered by a more generic subject.
Of course, the eventual goal is to give you custom subjects so you can do what you want without the subject menu being cluttered with everyone else’s subjects. I know that one has been a long time coming, but we do have to prioritize.
