Don’t want to step on anyone’s toes since I know there are a lot of folks out there who really love Serl’s Primary and Intermediate Language Lessons….but I am wondering if those of you who have used it can comment in more detail on what benefits you have seen from using these? Because I’ve seen them mentioned positively so often I’ve looked into them, but after looking at the Table of Contents I find myself thinking “we already narrate, we already do copywork – and will do dication when I feel we’re ready for it -(and I point out to her usage rules as we see them in our copywork selections), we already read and occasionally memorize poems, we already do nature and picture study…why do we need to use this book too?” My dd is also a blossoming creative writer which I don’t assign to her, but add that to say that she does a fair amount of original writing on her own initiative. So, I guess I’m just wondering if we will really miss anything if we opt not to use a book like this and wait until the middle grades to study grammar formally. Thanks for any comments you might have.
I love PLL….and it was gifted to me:) I do think you could put something similar together yourself. Certain things I like done for me because it helps me stay on track….but as long as you cover all the bases I don’t think it matters much what you use:) Gina
Jen, if you are already doing all those things, you DON’T need the book. It’s a convenience item for people who aren’t already doing all the things you mentioned. I also tried these books, decided the same thing (I’m already doing most of this on my own) made note of just a few things they taught at those ages that I hadn’t done yet, then sold the book. I didn’t use them at all by the time I got around to my third son.
I was going to say exactly what Bookworm said. If you are already doing all you listed, you don’t need the books! With 6 kids and my mind feeling like I was going when I was coming, PLL and ILL helped me a great deal to do those things with DC. Also for our ELL student, the books are necessary b/c he sees the usage rules (and examples) on paper.
Thanks ladies. That’s kind of what I was thinking too – that it would be redundant to get the book when we already do so much of what it covers integrated into our other subjects. The only thing I thought might be useful would be the usage rules, but again I am already finding that she is picking up so much naturally through her copywork and occasionally pointing various items out to her (and sometimes even when I don’t – she totally figured out when to use quotation marks on her own!) OK, [insert sigh of relief here], we’re doing enough. =)
