I started homeschooling with the Robinson self taught Curriculum this year. I have been a little Leary of not including science and social studies because Louisiana Law states that, it must be a curriculum equal to or better than public school. All public schools include science and social studies. I have been reading a lot about implementing CM with my current curriculum. Anyway, the reading books in the RC seemed to be a little over the top for my my children’s comprehension so I decided to start out with a couple of CM’s living book recommendations by grade level. My dd8 read 1 1/2 chapters of Caddie Woodlawn today and cannot tell me anything about it. My ds12 did not have much to say about Treasue Island either. They both read fairly well, it is the comprehending and retaining what they read that seems to be the problem. I was wondering if I should keeep reading the books at the suggested grade levels and only require a chapter a day? Or should I choose books from lower grade levels. We just started with narraration today. I started simply with Aesop fables to introduce the concept. I know narraration will help with the comprehension but until they have enough practice with it, what should I do about their quiet reading?

Are these books free reads?  I don’t require a narration from anything they read for free reading.  I only require narrations from actual school books.

Narration is very difficult to do, and since your kids are just starting out, expect them to have not much to say for right now.  It will come.  In the meantime, start out with just a few sentences – or less, if needed – until they get comfortable with that much, then up it to a paragraph at a time, then up to a whole page, etc.  This will take a long time to master, so please don’t expect this process to be within a week or two.  🙂  It could take as much as an entire school year or more.  Some kids do get the hang of it quickly, but not all.  Case in point: My 9yo is an excellent narrator, but we took off a few months from school over the summer.  Today we started back up.  She could hardly narrate at all!  8-/  Really took me by surprise, but it shouldn’t have.  When you’re out of practice, anything takes time to remaster.

    HTH!

Reading is part of our RC curriculum. We read a book of choice, right now from the living book list, for 1 hr. I am not requiring they narrarate these but I do like to ask them to tell me anything about the book because I want to know if they are retaining what they have read. If they are really focused on what they are reading its what I am trying to make sure of, comprehension? What does CM require for reading?

Sorry I mean book of choice from the list only. RC has a list of must reads but I am trying to get the kids into habit of reading with a little easier books. I am trying to implement CM into my current curriculum.
