I’m trying to figure out what to do with my almost 9yo (4th grade) son for reading.  Reading was something he struggled with for a while – but he improved a lot this last year.

He doesn’t want to read outloud (he doesn’t like it) – and was refusing to read for me today, as I was trying to evaluate what to do with him this year.   He did agree to read 1 page near the start, and 1 at the end of the book I wanted to try out with him… “More New Friends”.  He did ok (I only had him read about a paragraph at each spot) – but it wasn’t flawless.  He has a tendency to mispronounce, a tendency to mess up endings, and sometimes skips words or whole lines.   One example is he is likely to say things like “stopt-ed” for stopped.  (ie, says the word including the ending, and adds an “Ed – like the name” to it.  He does that often while just speaking too.   He also said  “lazy” instead of “lazily”.

Anyway – I’m wondering if I should find something like the McGuffy Reader to continue reading outloud, or if I should just pick one of the books we are doing with AO to buddy read with him – or buddy read a book he likes (Harry Potter 2 – we read Harry Potter 1 buddy read last year)…   or just not worry about it.

I still have my older kids read aloud. It’s a great skill and refines their overall speech and elocution. If your son feels challenged, just have him read 1 page a day and increase a bit every few weeks. Or you can read a paragraph, then he reads one, etc. It doesn’t have to be a long time, but consistency is the key! If it helps, maybe pick out a few challenging words from the selected passage before he reads and go over pronunciation/meaning. HTH!
