Has anyone used the Reading Literature series by Harriette Taylor Treadwell for their young readers? I was looking for something after Nora Gaydos’ beginning readers and these look very promising.
I haven’t used them, but thanks for pointing them out. I LOVE the Nora Gaydos books. This series, from Treadwell, looks like it’s written simply, with larger font and the harder words repeat. I read a few stories tonight and they look really nice. Not too hard for those just starting, but still interesting. My new reader will be ready for these in a few weeks, maybe months. I’m glad you found them so I can use them!!! And they’re free so if they don’t work out I’m not out a ton of money like other readers we’ve tried.
Glad I’m heading in the right direction. Right now with all the new information I’m gathering and the switching gears, I could easily have picked a 6th grade reader and called it a night. Thanks for the confirmation! I think they are pretty much the next step, right?
How many Gaydos Levels are you doing? I have four. My dd is blazing through Level 1, so I thought I’d look around for a “real” book for her after she’s finished Level 2.
I’ve used all the books so far. My son is going into the 3rd one this year. I have a son and dd and they both absolutely LOVE them. They voluntarily narrate because they re real stories that are interesting, not dumbed down or simplistic.
Excellent material. Of course, I’m a huge fan of Yesterday’s Classics/Baldwin Online books.
Rachel ~ how old were your kids when they used each book? I was thinking that the Primer is after dd reads through her beginning readers; is that right? Just found Baldwin also. This is going to be a great resource!
Hmmm, let’s see. I believe they each started the Primer when they were 6. My son just turned 9 and is getting ready to start the 3rd reader, which is the 4th book. My dd is 8 and starting the 2nd reader which is the 3rd book.
I warn you, they’ll finish early because if they are like mine, they won’t stick to the one sleciton given to them, but keep going!
