I’d be thankful for some advice on good titles to share with my 9th-grade son. He was homeschooled from K-8th grade, but last year we made the decision to enroll him in a local Christian school. It has been a very hard transition for him, unlike two of his older brothers who were transitioned similarly. Bottom line: he just learns in his own unique way and the traditional classroom is challenging. He’s losing any love of learning, and I wonder if I can get some good books into his head that would ignite the fire of inspiration for him, not just academically, but especially to encourage his sagging heart. He has no strong interests of any particular kind yet, so I’m prepared to take a trial-and-error approach until I find a good fit for him. The only read-aloud that I remember sparking joy in him as a homeschooler was a biography of Albert Einstein. Are there any living books you’ve seen your young teen boys devour that I might consider? Thank you for any suggestions.

I recommend Richards Almanac – about Benjamin Franklin.

The favorites of the boys in my house about that age:
DS 1 Horatio Hornblower, Treasure Island, The Lord of the Rings, To Kill a Mockingbird, GA Henty , A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court
DS 2 Where the Red Fern Grows, A Long Walk To Water, The Great Brain, the Art of Keeping Cool, and any of the short story books by Patrick McManus. I don’t know if CM would like them but they are hilarious and have such fabulous vocabulary but you either love them or hate them and you probably have to have at least some experience in the woods.
DS 3 is currently 13 but likes The Art of Keeping Cool, The Lord of the Rings, and the Redwall series, Dr. Jykell and Mr. Hyde, Beowulf, Swiss Family Robinson

- The Hiding Place
- And the Word Came With Power
- The Prisoner of Zenda
- Men of Iron
- Mover of Men and Mountains
- anything by James Herriot (but there is some mild language and alcohol if that bothers you)
- Animal Farm
- The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
- Shane
- Little Britches and others by Ralph Moody
- Kon-Tiki
- 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and others by Jules Verne
