Just started CM at the beginning of the year and feeling very confused about where to go with Reading instruction with my 7 yr old (2nd grade). She was in public school and can read at her grade level pretty well. We’ve been doing delightful reading lessons but she seems extremely bored. I feel she still needs something to give her more confidence and learning more words but feel very lost on what to do.
I sounds like she just needs time and practice to build fluency. I would just have her read, read, read aloud to you. Find books on her level and some even below so she’s not having to struggle with words and let her read. Sometimes it’s enjoyable for the two of you to alternate pages. You read one, then she reads one. If there are words she consistently has trouble with, work on those. But just give her time. Continue to read good books aloud to her. It’s important that she still hears good literature that is beyond what she can read for herself.
Thanks so much Robin! I tend to over think things very easily. We read a ton, and now that you mention it I haven’t really had her reading anything. She sometimes will read to her younger brother on her own which is nice. I’m gonna be sure to check out more books for her and I to read together, she will love that!
Try also a daily “audio book”. Go onto Loyalbooks.com and look under Children. Choose an audio recording of a book that you own (or can get from the library) but that your child has NOT yet read. Okay, ideally it is one she hasnt read, but not the end of the world if she has. There are tons of books from which to choose on loyalbooks. Once or twice a day have your child listen to a chapter while following along in the book. I actually have my children use headphones for this as it seems to increase the level of concentration greatly. This simple technique, done every day – for 2 years, at age 7-9 allowed reading ability and love of books to skyrocket for all of my children. Just make sure your child IS in fact following in the book during the reading, not simply enjoying the book read aloud. (Having books read aloud is great too, but there is a specific “reading instruction” purpose to this exercise, so make sure she is following in the book)
Our favorites around age 7 for this included:
Just So Stories
All of the Wizard of Oz series
Beatrix Potter’s books (this was where I broke the rule and allowed books they’d already read)
Thornton Burgess Adventures of… series (even though we have this going as a family time/science read aloud I often have my children doing an additional title on loyalbooks
Jungle Book
Fifty Famous Stories (another example where I did let them listen multiple times)
Blessings on your early reading journey!
