I need some wisdom in the area of reading comprehension. My son is in 5th grade and he has always had some issues with narration. It never seems to come easy to him unless its a real easy book. Recently I looked into whether or not he may be ADHD because he has a very difficult time staying on task and keeping his mind on things and these habits as well as others are some things I have been dealing with since he was 5. I always expected him to grow out of these things but he hasn’t. So, it seems he is ADHD and ODD. Last week we began doing a practice standardized test book to help prepare him for testing. This is the first year I have done this. I must say that even though I know I am doing this mainly to comply with the law I was somewhat discouraged with his results. On the reading comp. part, we probably did about 10 stories and on average he got 50% of the answers wrong. It’s like he has a hard time picking out details and reading between the lines. I now wonder if I should have him tutored or if there is a resource available to help me at home with this. When doing narrations he gets details mixed up and only gets about half of what I’m reading as well. He also struggled with math. He found it very hard to keep his thoughts and not make careless mistakes on multiplication and long division problems. I’m very concerned about how he might do on tests this year. I have recently started him on medication even though I don’t like it but wanted to see if it might help him. It hasn’t been long enough to really see any changes yet. Just wondering if any of you mothers might have some advice for me in these areas. Thank you.
