I need some recommendations for readers for my 5 year old who is reading well. He sort of picked it up on his own without alot of formal work. We’re using Abeka’s early readers right now but I would love to use more living books and I’m not sure what those would be for an early reader. What do you think?

My son is enjoying the Harriette Treadwell readers right now.  We have them on our eReader, but here is a link to check them out online.  http://www.mainlesson.com/displayauthor.php?author=treadwell

These are some of the ones we have enjoyed (I got most of this list from the AO site I think)  We just take them out of the library.

Frog and Toad readers by Arnold Lobel
Little Bear readers by Else Holmelund Minarek
George and Martha series by James Marshall
    Frances books by Russell Hoban
Henry and Mudge series by Cynthia Rylant

My early readers also just enjoy reading some of the picture books that we read aloud when they were younger.  The words are a bit trickier than the books that are specifically ‘early readers’, but because of the pictures and being familiar with the books, my kids did fine with them.

I second the Little Bear books too. Also, many Eric Carle books are wonderful to use as early readers. Many of his books have phrases that are repeated often and so are good for sight word recognition. The Pathway Readers from http://www.rainbowresource.com are the books we have used on a weekly basis for beginner reading instruction. My children read aloud twice per week from their reader so that I can hear how they’re annunciating, if they’re skipping words or reading too quickly, how their tones change for exclamations and questions, etc. I have one child who just began the grade 3 reader and one who is in the middle of grade 2. Although I feel they read above these levels, it is good practice for them to read aloud from something that is easy, but not twaddle-y, if that makes sense. I would also recommend books from Marjorie Flack, such as Angus and the Cat

    Hope that helps!

I think the McGuffey Readers are an excellent investment. My 6YO is in the second book. I pull passages from the later books (related to our history studies, usually) for my 10YO to read all the time.

In addition to Pathway and McGuffey readers, Elson readers are great too.

We also use the Pathway readers, Henry and Mudge, Frog and Toad, etc. We also enjoy the Mr. Putter and Tabby series also by Cynthia Rylant.
