Wow!  GREAT book!  Really has inspired me to do something about Sunday school and the youth in general with our church.  Highly recommend it!

On a side note, I asked my 2 oldest (8yo & 7yo) about Sunday school – very open-ended questions wondering their thoughts on what they’re learning (or not learning), etc.  Scary….  Very, very scary….  Especially from my very literal, very logical (yet highly emotional) 7yo.  I have decided that something must change today – like yesterday.  This has inspired me even more to fight for the faith of my children.  Please pray for us as hubby and I discuss this and how we want to go about this.  Surprised  Kind of scary thinking about it, but I know that I really need to do something about this before my children become one of the statistics.

I love that book as well!

I’d be interested to hear the reponse your dc had. My girls said that they were tired of hearing the same simple stories over and over with no real deep spiritual meaning. AND they only went for the candy/snacks and the games. We took our dds out of sunday school. In fact, we home church now. We have other disagreements with the doctrine taught at most churches, so it’s our only choice. We worship on the Sabbath for one thing so not many choices in churches out there.

    Will be praying for you!

I have not read the book, but I have heard his seminar message on the topic. We love Ken Ham’s dinosaur books. What is really interesting is if you attend Sunday School with your dc to see what is really going on. There is still bad influances of misbehaved children, and *not* a very interesting, engaging “history” lesson, to say the least. We don’t attend Sunday School or VBS anymore. Children attend worship service with us and expected to sit with us and pay attention to the service. (Really wish well-meaning church people would stop giving my dc candy and paper/pen during the service to occupy their minds away from the pastor’s message!)

My 8yo is bored.  The stories are too simple.  She’s in 3rd grade but reading at a 4th grade level, and the other kids in her class are in 4th grade.  She says she reads better than they do!  Her favorite part of Sunday school?  Crafts, which they don’t do enough of, and they’re too simple, as well.  :-/

My 7yo is also bored.  The stories don’t match what we read in the Bible at home.  Surprised  That is hugely perceptive for a 7yo!  And awfully scary……..  I asked her if she thinks Sunday school is helping her have more faith in God, and she quickly said “no.”  Surprised  YIKES!!!  Her fave part of SS?  The treats/candy!

For church, we sit up front, even with a squirmy toddler, and the kids are only allowed to color on the “kid bulletins” until the bells ring at the start of the service.  Then all pens go away, and they are expected to sit nicely, be quiet, stand when we stand, pray when we pray, and follow along in the hymnal for both liturgy and hymns.  Every other child in the church brings toys, colors, plays with the “worship bags,” etc.  We used to do that, until we realized that we were contributing to them not getting anything out of the service with all the distractions.  My toddler doesn’t even get Cheerios anymore – he is old enough to know to sit on my lap most of the service.  Sure, we have our bad days, but we also have very, very good days, and I think other parents may just be a tad jealous of how well-behaved our children are…  I know we’ve been told several times by older people in the church how well-behaved they are.  I tell them it’s just a matter of discipline, setting the example, and setting rules and following through.  🙂

Yes, we will definitely be doing something about this.  My dh wants me to write up a philosophy of sorts and what I see happening/wrong with the way we are teaching our youth.  Then I’m to spread the message among the parents and teachers and others in the church (along with this book Wink ) and see what starts to happen.  Then we can bring it up at a voter’s meeting &/or with the pastor (hubby will help present it).  I am nervous about this, but at the same time, my dd’s responses tell me I need to change this around quickly!  They are more learned about the Bible than any other kid at church (except for the pastor’s son – the only child to go to a Christian school), and this is THEIR response!  Oy…….

I didn’t read this book, but in curiousity of the post read the reviews on amazon to see what it was about.  I am curious as I am starting to teach Sunday School and homeschooling my dc with a Christian world view, what literature is there to teach children not just “God created the earth in 6 days”, but why should they believe that other than “because the adults and the Bible say so”?  I have faith that the Bible is the true literal inspired word of God.  My 5yo ds has received and confessed Jesus as his Lord and Savior.  I believe this is the Lord, as the fruit of his life shows his faith, but I don’t want him to have confessed Jesus only because he was taught by his parents and SS teachers that this is the only right way to live.  I want to teach my dc and the SS children (the kids are combined ages 4-12 and the lessons do teach straight from the Bible) WHY the Bible is true, not just that it is because I believe it is and because I said so.  It’s not that I want them to doubt the validity of the Bible, its just that I want them to have an answer to why evolution and anit-biblical science theology is to be disputed.  Any suggestions to implement in the curriculum about dinasours/evolution/science etc…. that teach from a Biblical perspective but goes beyond just “we believe this way because we shouldn’t doubt the Bible” would be great.

Answers in Genesis has tons of great apologetic books.  I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them.  My dh has an apologetics book he uses often, but it’s definitely geared toward adults/young adults.

Yes for AIG! They do have a few dvd’s as well as chidren’s books explaining creation, sin, and the fall! And why we believe it is 6 actual days not thousands or millions of yrs.

Go to their website and check out the kid’s books. D is for Dinosaur is not a “baby” book. Also Buddy Davis’ dvds explains things well.

They also have a kids magazine as well as an adults. Actually you get the kid’s one inside the adult magazine.

We have tons of Ken Ham’s dvd’s. Some of them are for teens but my kids can understand them. Most of them are for adults.

Also, Ken’s books Answers 1,2 and3 (3 books) are an awesome read! I believe it is a must read! I am currently reading ..Why Won’t They Listen?  About why our culture will not listen to the preaching of salvation. Good book!

    HTH

BTW, another good website is http://www.wayofthemaster.com Not an apologetics but they work w/ Ken too to help present why we are in need of salvation! Take the “Are You A Good Person” test.

This is the one I would consider for Sunday School. I thought about using it for hs, but I think it may be geared more towards a bigger group. Many other great resources are on their site as well.

We like Dinosaurs for Kids by Ken Ham and also Dinosaurs of Eden, which argues against stuff kids hear in ps.

Thanks for these suggestions.  I’d been thinking about this issue of teaching children not just the Bible is true, but WHY it is true all day (since reading this thread).  I had an in depth conversation about it with dh…..we chose to be Christians during our teenage years, but never had been challenged to defend our faith and never looked into apologetics…..in one sense, our faith is faith and we shouldn’t have to go in depth into apologetics….but in a another sense, our children are growing up in a culture where they will be told by others the Bible is a fairy tale and science proves that the creation theory is false, THUS we need to address this with them and teach them apologetics to some degree.  I bookmarked the links and look forward to exploring them and implementing them into my teaching of the Bible.

We are currently using Who is God and How Can I Know Him? by Apologia and are finding it very solid.

    Sarah,

Thanks for sharing the AIG bible curriculum. I’ve been searching for something to aide us as we study God’s word on the Sabbath. PERFECT resource! I also may get the Dinos for Kids book for our study coming up.

    Hey ladies,

I forgot to add that AIG book, A is for Adam book for kids goes into depth about creation, the fall, redemption. Great book!

I just received their newsletter, and their is a children’s ministry conference (SS and Awana)in March at their creation museum! If any of you are near Illinois! I am sure that will be a wealth of info!

Also, their new VBS program is out too! What a great resource for churches to teach apologetics to children!
