This is my FIRST post and I’m super nervous about beginning the adventure in homeschooling my girls. Granted we are only beginning at Kindergarten (and everyone tells me “don’t worry!”) but I still want to get myself familiar.
I looked (and may have overlooked) and couldn’t find a list of suggested read-alouds for older children–beyond 3-5 years. Maybe they’re too old and any old book will do? Or they’re expected to be reading independently?
Do you have any suggestions where I could see one? Excited to browse through a quality list!
Those would be read alouds. You also will have books to read aloud about whatever history time period you are enjoying, or nature/science related ones, etc.
For us, it has become tradition – we start every one of my kids entering to their first year of schooling on reading “All of a Kind Family”. It is a FAVORITE! And we loved “5 Little Peppers and How They Grew” so much that we named our youngest after a character in the book – Jasper Elliott!
All of a Kind Family was a huge hit here! Even my DS really enjoyed it (which surprised me since it’s a book about girls). lol
Don’t forget about the Little House series. Even though they are on the ages 3-5 list, they are great for all ages.
As far as reading independently, most moms here have at least one family read aloud going…even for their high schoolers! They do read more books on their own as they get older, but it’s so nice to take time each day to read together.
Agreeing with Holly – we always have at least one book we’re reading aloud to all ages, high school to the youngest. Right at the moment that is Peter Pan for us. It’s been a good one so far.
I’ve been homeschooling over 20 years and we start reading aloud to our children at birth until the leave home…lol…I don’t know if I’m allowed to tell you about my blog here but I’ve been posting gread books to read aloud (or independently) on different topics and for different ages. I hopw it will help!
