I’ve got a ten year old son who has ADHD and maybe some other disorders or learning disabilities. We’re currently working on getting all of that sorted out. He is very bright, but has had a very difficult time retaining math facts. I’ve read with great encouragement missceegee’s experience, and I’m thinking of taking a break from our regular math program to just focus on math facts. (We use Math-U-See.) I think he does OK with addition and subtraction, though he does make careless mistakes (could be because of the ADHD), but he truly can’t remember many math facts. He’s usually trying to skip count, and there are a few he just really doesn’t know at all–can’t even figure them out. Money is tight, but I know this program can be reused if I put the pages in sheet protectors and use a dry erase, right? I’ve got five children, and he is the oldest. Should I try to purchase the entire set along with the CDs right now? My other kids are 8, 6, 4, and nearly 2. The 8 and 6 year old don’t seem to be struggling nearly as much with  math, but I’d like to prevent any problems. So, in short, my questions are: 1)Should I just purchase the multiplication for now since money is tight and think about the other things later? 2)Do you think it’s best to just focus on Rapid Recall even when your child is quite behind (I think I already know the answer to this)?

I tried the Rapid Recall for my 10 and 12 year old kids – the multiplication packet.  We ended up using calculadder instead which worked a lot better for us.   We only used the first lesson or two of RR.  The main reason it did not work is because it was too confusing for me!  I did not want to take the time to learn the system.  I did not want to mess with it.

If you really still would like to try RR Multiplication,  I would be happy to sell mine for half of what I paid…….htt!

I’ll chime in from my computer soon. Yes, I highly recommend RR. It may look complicated, but it isn’t.  I can explain it very briefly. More soon. FYI, calculadder did not work for dd14.

Thanks for your thoughts, Alicia! I’m pretty sure the design of Calculadder isn’t what my bud needs. I think he needs the input that RR talks about. I’ll be looking forward to hearing from you, Christie.

Christie, I’m thinking this may have gotten buried, and you may have forgotten about it. I’m also wondering if there is a way to replicate the idea of Rapid Recall at home without the very expensive purchase. Any thoughts?

I am not Christie (sorry!) but this idea may be useful and less expensive- have you looked into any of Diane Craft’s products?

Thanks, Alicia! Yes, I have looked at Dianne Crafts materials. I’m not sure they would fit my son, though.

Hi easybrizy, I’m so sorry that this got lost in my brain shuffle! I’ll be the first to say that you might be able to replicate RR at home, but it would take some doing. It is pricey, but was 100% worth it for dd14 for whom NOTHING else worked.

Here’s the gist of the program.

    • 5 Sessions Per Day
    • Each Session ~ 2 Minutes
    • Complete Each Session at least 10 minutes apart
    • Sessions can be in any order
      • Session 1 is visual input only – flashcards or flashcards on the computer (we have the on the computer version).
      • Session 2 is visual input only, same as above
      • Session 3 is listen/write. Listen to the recording, each problem with the answer will be read row by row. Within the row they are not in the order read. Student listens, finds the problem, and writes in the answer.
      • Session 4 – Listen to the problems orally
      • Session 5 – Un-timed speed drill of previous problems; more per page as more are learned.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have more questions. If you need to see it in action, maybe I can email you.

    Christie
