Is quilling – not quilTing, quiLLing – considered a handicraft? It’s not on the SCM list, but there’s no way that list is exhaustive. I was thinking that our family could take up a ministry of greeting card making to send cards to people in our church, and there’s always rubber stamping to make cards, but I saw a quilling kit at the craft store today and thought it looked like a great skill to learn and would make beautiful cards.

I don’t see why it wouldn’t be. The purpose of CM handicrafts is to create something beautiful, isn’t it?

We’ve got a quilling kit, too. I think it’s a little above my DD5 right now, but she can certainly do simpler versions. And it’s definitely beautiful. I say it counts. Not that I’m an authority, but we’re sure counting it for CM handicrafts.

Okay, well…I think technically Charlotte said that it should be not just beautiful, but also useful.

So we consider quilling more of an art exercise than handicrafts. BUT – we have used it for decorations and cards, which do serve a purpose!

To me art, handicrafts and life skills sometimes all get lumped into the ‘useful and fun to do category’. So, I vote ‘yes’ to quilling!

It has to be at least as useful as soap carving…right?

I would consider it a handricraft.  I love the idea of the card ministry as well!
