I was wondering if my son can read Jo’s Boys and Little Men without reading any other of her books and at what grade? He’s 10 but reads high above his grade/age level. I was just wondering; my son hasn’t expressed an aversion to reading Alcott, I just didn’t think he would be that interested if I bring it up. Would a boy be interested? I know good writing has no gender bias.
My dd (9) has read Eight Cousins and enjoyed it immensely.
My first thought is: have you read them yourself? I don’t think I’ve read Jo’s Boys, but I’ve read Little Men and want to read it again this year. It’s a great book and as the mother of three little boys gives me some good parenting ideas! But it can certainly be enjoyed for other reasons, too.
You could certainly enjoy Little Men without reading any of the other books. It doesn’t hinge on them. Since you know your son best, my guess would be that you could answer this best. I don’t think this book is for every boy or every ten year old. There isn’t a lot of action (from what I can recall), but more plot about character, etc. So, if you haven’t read it yet, pick it up and do so! You’ll certainly enjoy it and then you’ll be able to know how well it would suit him.
No, I haven’t read them. My son definitely doesn’t need action in a storyline to be intersted; so if it’s strong on character development and has a good storyline, then he’ll most likely like it.
I’m reading Little Men aloud to my boys without first having read Little Women and they enjoy it. L.M. Alcott spends time on the character of each boy and how they grow. I personally love the book, but I have five boys.
I know I’m probably not gong to be able to fit in Little Women as a read-aloud; so it will be an independent read, we’ll see. So it could go either way for my son and if he doesn’t like it, he can still read Little Men without any problems.
I haven’t read Jo’s Boys thoroughly myself, just paged through it, but it seems that it follows along the lines of Little Men but as the boys grow into adults. My daughter read it and found it interesting to see how the boys all developed, matured, and where each of their character’s took them in life. She did say that she felt this book would be for an older reader than Little Men. She thought it would pretty heavy reading for a ten-year-old. HTH
So would you say say then that Little Men would be for at least a 10 yr. old and Jo’s Boy’s at least a year later? My son will be 11 this Fall and is an advanced reader; I could schedule it for next year as I was going to schedule Little Women for my dd. I think I”ll just have him listen to an audio of L.W. as there are many other books that are higher on my priority list for him to get to reading.
Thanks, Rachel
