I have a question for those who have used Teaching Textbooks for Algebra I. There is a used set for sale that includes the student text (no writing within), answer key, test bank, all of the lecture CD’s, and all but one of the solutions CD’s. The solution CD for lessons 1-30 is missing from this set.
Would you purchase this set with the missing solutions CD? What would be the top price you would want to pay for a set like this?
Thanks. I just don’t want to spend money only to find that I cannot function without this CD.
Is it the first version or version 2.0? You can get a replacement disk for $15 from TT, but I’d call first to make sure they still have the first version available since it’s a while supplies last thing. If it’s the first version, I’d probably pay $75 tops and a second edition a bit more. We have the first edition and it’s been fine, the second edition has some new features like self grading on the computer, but I didn’t find that necessary as I just correct the daily work myself. Hope this helps!
Unless you are particularly skilled at Algebra I would not recommend buying it without all the discs. Granted, the missing disc is at the very beginning so it would probably would not be too bad, but…Here is a brief synopsis of the first 30 lessons: Ch. 1 (lessons 1-10) Algebra Basics; Ch. 2 (lessons 11-19) Working with Integers; Ch. 3 (lessons 20-27) Order of Operations; Chapter 4 (lessons 28-32) Combining Like Terms. Perhaps you can look on the TT website and see more detailed description of the missing chapters. We have the second edition so the chapter breakdowns may be different.
Yes, I agree I wouldn’t want it with the missing disk either at that level, but since you can buy the replacement disk from TT directly, I wouldn’t hesitate if the price was right. Here is the info from their site ~ http://www.teachingtextbooks.com/v/vspfiles/tt/FAQs.htm#q18
Well, it would be more busywork for me, but I could check/grade those lessons myself. What are the solutions CD’s for, the student workbook problems or the tests? And what, then, is the answer key for?
the solutions cds are for the students when they have problelms. if, when they are working the problem out on the computer, they make a mistake they can click on “answer” or whatever it is and it works it out for them. the hallmark of teaching textbooks is that every math problem featured in the program is worked out for the student so they can see and understand their mistake. the cds also contain the teaching, problems and answers for the lesson. we have never used our student book or teacher manual. that is why missing a cd is a big deal, that will mean you will be missing 30 lessons!
Version 2, the one I have, keeps the students records for you, but honestly there aren’t that many records to keep. My daughter just tells me how she did on her lesson adn moves on to the next. We live in a state that doesnt need documentation so it is not that big of a deal either way. At the end of the course I plan to print out the test scores and keep those so I have some sort of record that she completed the program.
Cheryl, thank you for explaining this to me. It makes sense now. What I saw offered was on eBay, and I was a little wary when I saw that there were only a few bids & it’s only up around $22 right now……
