Quick question….did you cover Florida history? If so, when and what did you use? My oldest dd is going into 5th and I’m not sure when to cover our state history.
Hi Julie! 🙂 I never felt the need to do a separate Florida history course. We have read several lovely historical fiction books and stopped to go more in depth whenever we’ve come across something pertaining to Florida in our history studies. That about covers it. Your library should have plenty of books on Florida geography and history.
Here are some great historical fiction books we read in elementary school:
Strawberry Girl and Judy’s Journey by Lois Lenski.
For middle to high school:
A Land Remembered-The student edition (make sure you get the student version! The regular edition has adult themes). This comes in two books-part 1 and 2-and is one of my son’s all time favorite books. It’s historical fiction and tells the story of a family of early settlers.
The Yearling by Marjorie Keenan Rawlings. I read this book as a teen and loved it. My son really liked it as well. I don’t know if my daughter will ever read it because she is very tender hearted. It’s about a boy in early Florida who takes a fawn as a pet. It doesn’t end well. This is a classic and very well written.
We read another great book about a family of Florida crackers but I can’t remember the name. I really thought it was a Lois Lenski book but I can’t find it under her name. I will keep looking and see what I can find. I know I checked it out from our local library so I’ll look around next time I’m there and let you know.
I don’t really have any wonderful nonfiction books to recommend. We just used whatever was available at our local library. Nothing super impressive stands out in my memory.
Oh! There is a great book on the Seminole Indians by Sonia Bleeker. We really enjoyed all of her books about Native Americans. They were very good.
I tried to read Strawberry Girl a few years ago to my dd, but she didn’t care for it, so we quit. I think she was around 6 or 7. I may try it again. I haven’t looked at Judy’s Journey. I looked at A Land Remembered a few weeks ago (student edition) and decided it would be better to wait until middle or high school. I’ll look into the book by Sonia Bleeker.
You and I are on the same library system. I get book from Glades county from time to time, so I should be able to get some of the ones you are recommending that you were able to get from the library.
Thanks,
Julie
