I am doing 106 days of Creation Studies with my two elementary aged children and are enjoying it a lot. We are now on Day 5 and are learning about insects. My question is this (which may be a dumb question but I am a little confused!) why do the lessons ask the kids to read about spiders (christian liberty nature reader) and draw pictures of a spider web etc.? The first thing we did when starting on insects was go to the liberary and read about them with extra books that were not required. They told us that spiders are NOT insects but arachnids. Also, when reading the bible’s fifth day account of creation it said “all flying creaturs”. Most insects have wings and can fly-I get this. Spiders don’t fly-they are not insects-so why are we learning about them now? My son caught this right away and I think it confused him. Is there a reason that we are covering spiders now? Am I missing something very obvious?
You’re right, Miranda, spiders are not insects. We posted a correction and a suggestion for that portion of the notebook on our Links and Tips page for 106 Days. There are lots of other great resources on that page too; you might want to check it out.
We are doing the 106 Days as well but didn’t notice any of the errors and since we’ve taken our time getting through the lessons I’m excited to see the links and tips because it has some great ideas!
Hope you guys don’t mind my tagging along with a question…
Initially I had thought we would do science one day a week – maybe two. I had planed to start with 106 days, but with only devoting one or two days a week to it, I guess it could take quite a while to get through. Do others of you kind of do it at your own pace, and does that work pretty well for you? Thanks!
First of all, Sonya, thanks for the reminder of the Link and Tips page! I use this help for Gen. to Deut. but forgot to check it out for 106 days! Thanks for answering – I appreciate it.
Megan, we have been doing this at our own pace and have liked it a lot. Sometimes we have ended up combining more than one lesson in one day because we were enjoying it and were on a roll and decided to just keep going because it is such a gentle approach and most of the lessons are not to “intense” 😉 HTH.
God bless,
Miranda
