Okay, my daughter is 7 (and my son is 2) and we are doing module 1 this year.  Which module is American History introduced?  4 or 5 right?  It seems like such a long time to wait to introduce American History.

I was lucky enough to find the entire collection of YWAM’s Heroes for Young Readers (20 books, each focusing on Christian Heroes) and Heroes of History for Young Readers (5 books focusing on historical Heroes) for an amazing price on ebay.  The historical heroes are American History.  I would LOVE to start using these with my daughter but, can’t seem to figure out the best way to work them in since none of them are from ancient times.

They are written in a rhyming poem style and have lovely illustrations.  I think she would do fine reading them to me but, I already have so many other things she reads to me (Christian Liberty Nature Readers, Reading Literature Books by Free & Treadwell & the Readers from the Phonics Museum Kit we have).  I pondered maybe using these as a bedtime story too but, just not sure.  And the dates that each person lived are on the back of each book so then I think, well if we read them, we should include them in the Book of Centuries.

I feel like if I wait until Module 4 or 5 she will be too old to be interested in these.  (they do have ones written for older kids too without the rhyming poetic style but, these are what we have).  Or should I save them for the summer and maybe do a little American history during the summer months?  Or just see if any of them spark her interest to want to learn more about that person or historical event etc?

Thoughts or suggestions?  Is anyone else using these books?

Sorry for my scattered thoughts, I’m lacking sleep this week.  Haha!

Module 5 is early American history alongside world history for that time period. Module 6 is 1850-modern times US and world history. IMHO, Module 5 is just as good a place to start as Module 1. Many find benefits to starting with US history just as much as others like to start with ancient history. Either choice is fine. My young dc seem fine jumping around time periods between biography read alouds artists, composers, and our current history period. I am mostly aiming for exposure to the extraordinary character of history heroes vs. having it all in proper time order during the elementary years. So they are studying Abraham, a missionary from the 1800s, pioneer life/Westward expansion right now. It’s just where we’re at with the interesting books on hand at home and OT is where they are in Sunday School. When trying to keep history in perspective by jumping around in time periods here and there , I just try to distinguish the time between thousands of years ago, a few hundred years ago, or reference a time equivalent to when their grandparents or great grandparents were children.

Another suggestion is keep plugging away at module 1, and use the YWAM books for free reads.

I think either would be fine (using them now with Module 1 as an extra or switching to Module 5).  You can still add them to your book of centuries even if you use module 1.  Also remember that YWAM has fabulous books for the older kids too that your children can read later that will surely go into more depth than the younger versions will.  I haven’t read any of the younger books, but the older ones by Janet & Geoff Benge are wonderful and we have read many of both the missionary ones as well as the heros of history ones.

    Some ideas that might work:

    1. Rotate them in with the other readers – like a nature, then history, then literature, then nature, etc.

    2. Save them for next year.

    3. Use them during summer vacation.

I always have more books than time! LOL

So, I lost track of this thread somehow and I just wanted to say Thank You to those who responded. So much to ponder. 🙂

We are doing Module 1 also, and it seemed to me that there was time in term 2 to do a month or two of North American history. I’ll be reading US and Canadian picture books/short stories at that time. Then we’ll pick up on Ancient Egypt again.
