My DH and I were thinking about getting our girls their own computer for Christmas – just a very small laptop so they could play their computer games that are internet based for math and reading and also so my preschooler can watch a free online based preschool program while I’m teaching math or reading to the 6 or 4 year old. I read that some people were accessing the SCM Organizer via their Wii – I’m wondering if instead of getting a computer for our girls if we should get a Wii instead – I think it would probably be cheaper and I’d rather have them looking at a large tv screen over the 10 inch computer screen we would be getting them – does anyone know if the Wii would be good for what we are looking to use the computer for? I’d also like the girls to do Read, Write Type on the computer/Wii – but I’d like to get the CD rom version so we don’t have to pay the yearly fee to do it internet based. If anyone has experience and can give me some advice I’d really appreciate it!
We have a Wii and you can access the internet with it. The one thing I’m not sure about is if they make a keyboard for it. Until now we have to use the remote to point at a keyboard on the screen in order to input information so that might be a drawback for you. Other than that we love it because even playing non-sports games gives you exercise.
I believe you can plug a regular USB keyboard into it.
Yes, you can access the internet with it (if you have a Wifi LAN and internet connection… – and I think you can buy an adaptor to plug a wired LAN in instead…) BUT it isn’t very fast and is pretty limited. It is hard to say if it would run the internet games you want it to – and it wouldn’t do a CD based game.
I love the Wii Sports that comes with it for bad weather days…..
We have a Wii, but like the other posters found it cumbersome for internet usage. I would say, however, that it is likely that Ninetendo is going to improve that portion of the Wii in short time. They are now “netflix” ready and some other new internet based features as well.
The Wii is the only kind of gaming system we have in our house because it is so family friendly. I believe that Focus on the Family’s Plugged In said that it is the most family friendly of video game systems out there because so many of the Nintendo created games are fun for 4 year olds through 90 year olds. Here is their inital review of the Wii: http://www.pluggedin.com/games/consoles/wii.aspx
We only own 5 games… the regular package that came with it, Tyger Woods (ugh) for my husband, EA Active, Wii Fit and Wii Sports Resort. We close up our Wii from May-September and insist on outside play. Wii Sports Resort is probably the most impressive as it is totally family friends and a lot of active fun. You cannot play the Wii Sports Resort well without getting up off of the couch and actually jumping around. In snowy Wisconsin… we need some sunshine (albeit artifical) in the middle of the winter.
