This may sound like a silly question, but I am truly curious as a new CMer 🙂

How much is my fourth grader supposed to be reading on his own of the curriculum? Up until now, I’ve read most of our books to my children and assigned him one chapter book to read on his own and narrate to me. But there is no way I can read all these books to both my school-aged children.

If reading skills are good enough, I have them read their own science and grade specific history books. I read family ones aloud.

Beginning in 4th grade, a child who no longer needs to concentrate on how to read, can begin independently reading some or all of their books for school. How many you assign to read independently is up to you.

Depending on the child, it may be best to gradually increase the number of books to be read independently over several weeks, rather than requiring all of them at once. By gradually increasing the number of books, the child has time to adjust to the new expectations, you can evaluate how well she or he does with reading the books independently a little at a time, and it can help your child gain confidence as she or he starts to take ownership of her or his education.
