Question about possibly starting SCM

    Hi everyone,

I was on here months ago, wanting to start using SCM but I never followed through. I had some health challenges that complicated things but I’m feeling better now and here I am again. 🙂  I always liked the CM approach and feel like it’s something we could naturally implement at this point. I realized that I really need to teach my kids together for as many subjects as possible. There is a large age range, with ds13, ds11, ds6 and dd3. It dawned on me recently when I started teaching them character traits with a scripture to memorize and I sat them all down at the kitchen table and stood at one end with a white board. I talked about the trait, we discussed it, I asked questions, and we memorized the verse together. I thought, wow this could really work! LOL. It’s kind of crazy that although I have been homeschooling from the beginning, I never tried this type of thing with them. It was always me bouncing around from one to the other or them together but working on different things and trying to get them to be more independent and teach themselves, sort of. It always felt chaotic. Does that make sense?

So, would SCM work with that type of situation? Are there things for me to “teach” and discuss? I know I would read and they would do narration. I also would have then do math and language arts on their own levels, which they are already doing. I also have very active boys so they like hands-on and outside stuff so I’m looking forward to doing a nature study once a week. We all need to get out and get active. 🙂 I just feel like SCM would be (at the risk of sounding redundant) simple and a great way to bring them all together. Are there any hands-on activities built-in? Or I suppose we could easily add some in.

    Thanks for any help!

SCM sounds like a good fit for you. The modules for history include a family “spine” to teach and age appropriate assigned reading titles. They’d continue with math and language arts as you’ve described. Nature study and outside activities will keep their energy burned off. ;0) There are some hands on activities, especially in the exam week suggestions and on the “links and tips” pages for each module on the website. Take a look at the free sample pages to determine which module would best suit your family at this point in time.

The science suggestions include hands on activities, especially if you use some of the suggested curriculum. Our family uses mostly living books, outdoor time, hunting, butchering, gardening, canning, and simple science projects in the early years. Plenty to do!

I don’t have anything to add, just wanted to share (and appreciate) that I’m not the only one who had wanted to but just didn’t – and is now ready.  LOL

    You’re not alone!  Smile
